It takes one listen to know that Frank Grimaldi is an artist who brings the experience of street smart and New York savvy to his music. Grimaldi is a native New Yorker who started his career in music at the late age of 19. When, without any previous knowledge of a musical instrument or theory, he attended the music program at City College. His most valuable lessons in College came during those years in which he studied with Jazz vocal great Shelia Jordan. In her workshop, Frank learned the important ingredients which go into vocal performance such as song arrangement, vocal style and stage persona.
He later left City College to become lead vocalist for a Brooklyn based band "The Prospects". In the earlier part of the 1980's The Prospects disbanded. Around the same time, Frank began to take a strong interest in electronic music which was beginning to be more widely accepted and then in vogue. Since that time, he has been performing to self- produced tracks as an outlet for his songwriting talents.
Frank has appeared at many of New York's clubs in the course of his musical career. Two of his most notable appearances were at the Apollo. Frank sang an original the first time and Chuck Berry cover the second. In both instances, Frank won over the audience.
Always staying true to his love of songwriting and music production. He is continually working at perfecting his craft by experimentation and collaboration. One of his most notable compositions is a collaboration with lyricist Jeanne Reed titled "Reaper On The Prowl". Another is "All Of Your Love", a song with a Motown feel written with lyricist Mai Beard.
Frank Grimaldi is also known for his solo writing efforts with such songs as the very British sounding "Walking Backward" and "Hell On Earth". In his song "Here I Am" (In Love with You),Frank captures some of the production quality of 70's disco and turns it into a contemporary dance recording. Frank Grimaldi also approaches very serious topics in his music with such songs as "Love You To Death" and "Here We Go" (Again) Each song deals with the topic of AIDS from different perspectives. The former pokes fun at fear of the disease and the latter deals with the pain of a loss. In 1991, Frank received an honorable mention in the Mid-Atlantic Annual Song Contest for his song "Long Distance Runner".
While working on his songwriting, Frank has had many reincarnations. He has appeared in a vocal/guitar duo as a front man/lyricist and also in the cabaret arena with his own show titled "Live and More". In 1994, He premiered a "live to Video" piece titled "Strangers And Other Lovers", regarded by many as performance art. Currently, Frank is promoting his CD "Walking Backward" on Emphatic Records and is recuperating after several performances in a theatrical presentation displaying most of the songs on his CD.
