Danielle Howle and Daemon Records go way back. We first discovered this truly unique singer/songwriter -- who hails from Columbia, SC -- in 1992 when she was the front person for a band called Lay Quiet Awhile. We were struck by the character of Danielle's singing voice, her unusual sense of vocal melody, her amazing lyrics, her goofy and hilarious between-song chatter. We thought to ourselves, "this girl is like an indie rock Joni Mitchell or Rickie Lee Jones, or perhaps an articulate Loretta Lynn fronting the Throwing Muses or The Pixies." Not that she necessarily sounds exactly like any of those artists, mind you. It was Danielle's one-of-a-kind stage persona and her depth of character that prompted those comparisons. We knew we had stumbled across a truly original and extremely wonderful artist. In short, Danielle charmed the pants off us. To this day, she continues to leave audiences pant-less whenever she performs.
Daemon Records signed Lay Quiet Awhile, and they recorded and released an album called Delicate Wire in 1993. The record sold great, got tons of college radio play, and the band's press kit exploded with glowing reviews from publications like Ray Gun, Alternative Press, CMJ, Album Network, Gavin Report, Option, etc. Daemon Records had picked a winner, and everybody knew it.
Eventually, Lay Quiet Awhile went the why of the dodo bird, but Danielle has continued to thrive as a solo artist. She has two careers really, one as a solo acoustic performer, and one as frontperson for the full-band electric act called The Tantrums. People often ask Danielle why she divides her time and energy between two different careers - - would she not go further more quickly if she concentrated on one thing or the other? Danielle says that the rock band and the solo acoustic thing are very important outlets for her as an artist, and both are necessary. If this keeps her from getting on the "fast track" to fame and fortune, then so be it. Danielle is a songwriter who needs great latitude in her creative endeavors. She follows her own rules and is not limited to specific labels or genres. Her music has been called alternative rock, southern rock, country, folk... you name it. Quirky and eclectic? Oh, yes indeedy! Danielle Howle and The Tantrums just let the music flow, and, as far as they are concerned people can label it anything they like.
And what about The Tantrums? These guys are as solid a musical entity as you are likely to find these days. Guitarist John Furr and bassist Bryan Williams are from the now defunct Blightobody, whose appearance on The Conan O'Brien Show gained them national recognition. Drummer Troy Tague was at one time the drummer for Lay Quiet Awhile. All of the Tantrums live in Columbia, SC, where they are known for being incredibly nice guys, amazing musicians, and avowed Budweiser drinkers.
These days, Danielle Howle is very much in demand. She has either recently released, or is about to release recordings on Daemon Records, Sub Pop, Simple Machines, and Kill Rock Stars. She has toured with the likes of Throwing Muses, Ani Difranco, Indigo Girls, Fugazi, The Grifters, and Tsunami. She recently appeared on national television as opening act for Indigo Girls on their recent pay-per-view. Danielle regularly tours the US from coast to coast, including high profile appearances at Austin's SXSW, New York City's CNU New Music Festival, Seattle's Bumbershoot Festival, and Nashville's Extravaganza. She has also toured England more than once. Definitely one of the current queens of the indie rock scene, Danielle is now releasing what is sure to be her biggest break-through album yet. It is a full-band electric album - recorded with the Tantrums - entitled Do A Two Sable. The band has also had the extremely good fortune to land David Leondard as producer and engineer. For those unfamiliar with Leonard's work, he has produced and/or engineered albums for artists like K. D. Lang, Prince, Indigo Girls, Duran Duran The Black Crowes, John Cougar Mellencamp... the list goes on and on. Leonard's offer to produce and engineer this album is a real testament to the quality of this music!
