Sea Saw is the work of one obsessed songwriter, Trevor Kampmann. Although his songs are always insidiously catchy with seemingly effortless hooks, each one is a labor of love. Songs are recorded and re-recorded and mixed and re-mixed under his unflinching, ever-critical eye. If Trevor was to have to run up 100 flights of stairs per song it would not be as exhausting as the actual recording process. If he were required to move the tape reels using only the force of his tongue, it would be no less painful. Covering the erase heads with tape, bouncing up to 17 tracks at a time, and using visual scoring techniques, Trevor stands as the antithesis of the all-pervasive misinformed theory that... 4-track equals lo-fi. Hello! Most of the Beatles hits were recorded on a 4-track...
On MAGNETOPHONE you hear a year's worth - hundreds - of sound experiments... fed first through Trevor's fine ear for pop and then through the diverse mixing styles of five delicious engineers: Geoff Turner, Evan Shurak, Robert Salsbury, Dave Trumfio and Warren DeFever (His Name is Alive). Previously recorded items like the stellar (nad now out of print)..AND ITS HEAD POPPED OFF and the STEREO 7" also show Trevor's fondness for homemade recording - using, at times, boxes and blanket-covered buckets for drums.
The Fucking Name!
To our knowledge there are at least 4 other See Saws in the world clinging to
the name (confounding, considering how ordinary it is). To tell you the
truth, Trevor has been looking for an excuse to lose it from the day it was
foisted upon him by an early member of the original incarnation. He began
slowly, changing See Saw to Sea Saw, only to find one of the other "Saws" had
already beaten him to it. Anyway, all future recordings will be released
under the name Magnetophone...on labels other than Simple Machines.
* Factoid: Trevor dabbled in acting back when he went to Jr High. If you can correctly describe any of the small roles he played in episodes of Charles in Charge, Who's the Boss or Little House on the Prairie you will win our admiration forever!
