The Hang Ups
So We Go
Clean Records, 2217 Nicollet Ave., S. Minneapolis MN 55404, MCclean@aol.com
Release Date: 1997

Most indie-pop bands owe their start to the Beatles, but how many also draw inspiration from the likes of Crosby, Stills and Nash?

The Hang Ups unabashedly pillage their collection of 70s folk-pop LPs on their harmony-laden release So We Go, but despite the sometimes sugary melodies there is a strangely brooding quality underlying many songs. Maybe that somber touch arises from the occasional tribute to the pre-congas Stone Roses, or maybe the moments of power strumming more typical of Unrest or a particularly agitated Johnny Marr. Undoubtedly it will be too sappy for some, but So We Go goes a long way to cure a pop sweet tooth.
